“Ozzy was back to his old self again …”
This is Ozzy — a sweet dog who loves nothing more than the seeing the smiling faces of his loving family. But up until recently, the poor pup was unable to see anything at all.
It all began last August, when, at the age of 10, Ozzy developed diabetic cataracts.
After a lifetime with vision, he was left totally blind.

Hoping to find help for his eyesight, Ozzy’s family in Brazil brought him to veterinarian Dr. Thiago Ferreira. To Ferreira, it was clear that not being able to see was having a profound effect on Ozzy.
“Due to his blindness, he’d lost his excitement for life,” Ferreira told The Dodo. “He was no longer secure in himself.”
Even walking around had become nearly impossible:
For three long months, Ozzy lived in a world that he couldn’t make out — becoming slowly resigned to the notion that he would never see his family’s faces ever again. But then everything changed.
Last month, Ferreira was able to successfully preform cataract surgery on Ozzy, restoring his sight just in time for the holidays.
Leaving the operating room, the little dog couldn’t wait to set his eyes on the people he loves most:
Ozzy was overjoyed — and his family was, too.
“Each patient who regains his sight exhibits a different emotion, but it’s always exciting and satisfying,” Ferreira said. “Ozzy was back to his old self again soon after recovering from anesthesia.”

According to Ferreira, Ozzy is back to running and playing like the happy, energetic pup he’d been before losing his sight.
His outlook couldn’t be brighter.

For Ferreira, outcomes like Ozzy’s are what make his profession so worthwhile.
“All patients become like our children,” he said. “I think that’s the magic of veterinary medicine.”
