Puppy Abandoned On Roadside Finally Relaxes When He Gets His First Hug

He knew just what to do.

In a sea of green and brown grasses on a roadside in Serbia, it’s easy to miss animals or objects hidden within. And yet, somehow, an animal advocate named Milan recently drove by and managed to spot a helpless little face peeking out from the brush.

Milan, who works with Dog Rescue Shelter, Serbia, began recording the rescue as he exited his car.

“Come! Come, love!” Milan said in Serbian, coaxing the frightened pup in a gentle tone.

Wary of his rescuer, the beagle puppy ran into a drainage pipe and began barking from inside. But Milan wasn’t perturbed. He continued talking to the stray, patiently encouraging him out from his hiding spot. Eventually, the puppy realized Milan meant no harm. He tentatively emerged from the pipe and allowed Milan to stroke his head.

Milan cradled the puppy in his arms and carried him to a crate in the back of his car. He planted a kiss on the puppy’s head as they walked, reassuring him that everything would be OK.

The pup arrived at an animal hospital later that day and received treatment for his injuries. His doting rescuer stayed by his side, offering the comfort of a familiar face.

Already feeling a bit brighter, the beagle continued his journey to health in a foster home. The light returned to his eyes as he ate regular meals and gained weight. Finally content, he wagged his tail for the first time.

A month later, the pup was almost unrecognizable. He’d transformed from a skin-and-bones stray into a flourishing, cuddly boy. His rescuer couldn’t believe how far he’d come.

On a last visit, Milan bid goodbye to his friend in a bittersweet moment. The dog would soon travel to his permanent home, where he’d live in contentment with a loving family. But for now, safe in Milan’s arms during a final embrace, the dog and his savior wordlessly said “Farewell,” each of them grateful for the other.
