“Today is the beginning of a whole new life …”
As a dedicated dog rescuer and founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, Suzette Hall is used to receiving urgent messages about pups in need. But one request she received last week from her friend, Sandra Viveros Jackson, made her more frantic than most.
Viveros Jackson reported seeing a little dog with severely matted fur running aimlessly through a busy neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. With temperatures continuing to rise and nowhere for him to hide, the pup desperately needed help.

“[The] poor baby [was] covered in dreadlocks and carrying a heavy past of never knowing love,” Hall wrote on Facebook.
Time was of the essence, but Hall was already on a different rescue mission when Viveros Jackson first messaged her about the matted pup. That’s when a team of trusted volunteers and friends stepped in to help.
“Thankfully, my friends Nuñez Aky, Yamileth and Karla were able to go,” Hall wrote.

Viveros Jackson and the team scoured the neighborhood for the dog, but they couldn’t find him anywhere. Then, they saw a flash of white fur shifting beneath a nearby vehicle.
“After searching for a while, there he was under a car,” Hall wrote.

The team surrounded the car to ensure the pup couldn’t run away again. Then, after showering him with praises and encouragement, they secured a leash around his neck and gently pulled him out from under the car.
“Karla was able to leash him,” Hall wrote. “He was safe.”

Hall arrived soon after the pup was rescued, and she was shocked by the severity of the mats in his fur. He was nervous, unsure of his rescuers and unable to see properly due to the layers of knotted fur in his face, but Hall assured him that everything would be OK.
“He doesn’t know human touch or what it feels like to matter,” Hall wrote. “But we will be shaving away his past, and he will learn what it feels like to matter.”

Later that day, after giving him a thorough checkup, the vet team at Camino Pet Hospital did just that. They shaved away his fur, revealing his adorable face and endearing underbite.
Finally, the pup — later named Maurice — could see again. And with a fresh haircut and nonstop love and praise from his new friends, Maurice looked better than ever.
“Can you imagine not being able to see in years or having dreadlocks so tight and creepy crawling ticks all over you?” Hall wrote on Facebook. “And then one day, all of a sudden, you feel like a million dollars.”

It’s been a little over a week since Maurice’s rescue, and the sweet boy is already thriving in foster care. He’s still searching for a forever family and can’t wait to be adopted one one day, but until then, he’s enjoying his newfound life as a well-cared for and loved boy.
“Today is the beginning of a whole new life, a past stripped away …” Hall wrote. “Be still my heart.”
