4-Year Shelter Resident Doesn’t Understand Why No One Wants Him

“He has watched 1,239 sunrises through the windows of our shelter and spent 107,111,965 seconds dreaming of a family.”

Meet Smokey — a social, loving rescue pup with soulful brown eyes and perky ears. Years ago, Smokey arrived at the Pennsylvania SPCA ready for his life to change. At the time, Smokey was underweight and easily excited. With help from patient animal experts, Smokey gained strength and learned how to be a good boy. Eventually, he began looking for a family.

Four years later, he’s still looking.

“In his 40 months of waiting, only a handful of people have asked about him,” the Pennsylvania SPCA wrote in a Facebook post about Smokey. “He has watched 1,239 sunrises through the windows of our shelter and spent 107,111,965 seconds dreaming of a family.”

With each passing month, Pennsylvania SPCA staff become increasingly stumped by Smokey’s inability to find a home. They know that if given the chance, Smokey could be someone’s perfect pet.

“I love his fierce loyalty,” Smokey’s friend, a volunteer at the Pennsylvania SPCA, told The Dodo. “He looks at me with such devotion, and he’ll frequently check in by looking back at me when we’re on walks. He’s also gorgeous, with his deep black fur with rich brown highlights. It’s hard to see this come through in photos, but he’s really quite spectacular.”

Smokey is the ideal companion for someone looking to up their exercise.

“Smokey loves walks,” the volunteer said. “He loves walking in quieter areas where he can take in the different scents and unwind. He’s also a fan of fetch and tug.”

The affectionate pup would love to live with adults or older children. While Smokey can handle walking by other dogs while outside, he’d prefer to be the only dog in his household.

“He’d thrive with a family or person who was interested in working on training new skills or engaging in some dog sports,” the volunteer said. “City or country life would be fine with him — as long as his family loves him and loves being with him.”

With any luck, Smokey won’t be waiting very much longer.

“If you have room in your heart for a dog who knows the true meaning of resilience, please consider giving Smokey a chance,” the Pennsylvania SPCA wrote in a Facebook post. “Together, let’s rewrite his story and show him that love knows no bounds.”
