They couldn’t believe it.
This past October, staff members at Adams County Pet Rescue in Othello, Washington, were met with a heartbreaking surprise when they noticed a cardboard box abandoned on the sidewalk near the rescue center.
“Found on HWY 17,” read a note scrawled in pen on the side of the box.

Members of the short-staffed rescue team already knew who’d be inside. They couldn’t hide their frustration.
“I think that was the general response from everyone here that day,” rescue staff member Anita Plancarte told The Dodo. “‘Not again.’”
Peeking into the box, they saw them — seven 9-week-old puppies staring up from within their makeshift home.

Rescuers took the pups inside and gave them food and water.
The puppies, surely feeling frazzled after their hectic day, tentatively began to trust their new friends.
“They seemed a little, tiny bit … maybe scared?” Plancarte said. “But not in an aggressive way or trying to bite people. They’re just unsure.”

Adams County Pet Rescue team members hope that this story encourages people to do the right thing when dealing with animals in need. Pets should never be left to fend for themselves, and those who need to surrender their animals should always go through the appropriate channels. In addition, pets should be spayed or neutered to prevent future animals ending up on the street.
“Crazy things happen to us all the time!” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post about the incident. “We could decide to not share all the times [that] this [happens] and just keep it to ourselves, or we can share it with you.”

Luckily for these little guys, their story ended on a bright note. Safe with people who have their best interests at heart, they can stop worrying about survival and begin enjoying the comforts of love.
